Farewell, Twitter

Kevin GaminNovember 7, 2024November 7, 2024

It’s time.

For a lot of us, Twitter was the first social media platform we used on a regular basis. With just 140 characters (later 280), we would tell the world what we were doing, how we were feeling, and other thoughts that crossed our mind as we went through our days and our lives. It’s hard to believe that Twitter began as a service you sent texts to (hence the 140 character limit at the start), nor that there was a time where retweets, hashtags, replies, and other features we’re accustomed to, both on Twitter and on other services, did not exist.

Now, however, Twitter has become a twisted, poisonous, and disappointing right-wing parody site thanks to the machinations of a fascist South African billionaire who has now helped another fascist regain the presidency of the United States. I thought that I could stay on Twitter when it was bought by Elon Musk back in 2022, especially as many of the drum corps and marching arts people I follow and interact with remained on Twitter and didn’t move to services like Mastodon, a platform I had set up on shortly after the Twitter purchase. With the move of Bluesky out of beta and opening registration to all, I have decided to make that my microblogging home.

I’ll keep my Twitter account active as I don’t want my username to become available for use by some incel in their mother’s basement, but I’ll only update it on an approximate monthly basis. Those updates will simply point other users to my other social media accounts. I’ll also start the process of deleting my tweets, likes, and other activity from my years of Twitter history so they can’t be used by Grok, the AI service Musk added to Twitter. I don’t trust AI as it is, and that goes double for anything Musk thinks is a good idea.
