The lack of security and precautions that companies like Facebook, X, and other social media companies provide for their own services are a reminder to me to minimize what I share on these sites. This is why I try to only post links to my website, though I’m not 100% good at following my own rule just yet. My recent new kitty pictures I shared are a glaring example of that. I definitely second making sure your social media accounts have strong passwords and, if available, multi-factor authentication. Any services which don’t allow either or require you to upgrade to a paid service are ones you should avoid at all times.
Protecting yourself online includes taking some simple steps, like always using strong passwords and setting up two-factor authentication on your devices. You should also avoid clicking on unknown links, regularly run a malware scanner on your devices, and use a password manager — especially considering that unique passwords can help prevent future incidents that are beyond tech companies’ control.
