I sit at a computer pretty much my entire work day, and my body reminds me about it any time I stand up to take a break or when my work day ends. Now that I’m in my 50s, I feel it even more I know I need to move around more during the day, but I tend to fall into the work rabbit hole easily
This TED talk from journalist and author Manoush Zomorodi brought to my attention a study which led to an easy change to my work day: After I sit for half an hour, I get up and move around for 5 minutes. To ensure I do this, I installed the Solanum app on my Pebble watch. This app lets me set a work timer and a break timer and vibrates when each timer finishes. One push of a button starts the next timer.
So far, after a week, I’ve noticed that I’ve had less pain when I get up each time. What’s more, I’m doing more with my break time. For example, I spent one of my 5 minute movement breaks yesterday vacuuming our upstairs floor. I also find I have more energy after work, so I’m getting more done around the house. The best part is that I didn’t have to buy any exercise equipment or desk accessories to do this. I just altered my work habits.
Give this video a watch and let me know if you also make this change, if you don’t already do this.
